Read and Bead: Adventures in Literacy

My Project

My teammates and I decided to try something new this year as an incentive to get our students to read more, and I am so excited about it! Schoolwide we use A.R., or Accelerated Reader. Accelerated Reader is a computerized reading program designed to motivate and monitor students' independent reading practice. It helps teachers manage and assess students' reading comprehension by having them take quizzes on the books they read.

We want to build our students' literacy and comprehension, but we need your help!

On Fridays we will look at each student's reading report, and for every 80 or above a student makes on a quiz they get to pick a bead from the bead bar! Whether it's 10 books or 25 books, they get a bead for each 80 and above! As students collect more beads, they can string them into a necklace (dog tag chain), creating a visual and tangible representation of their progress and success throughout the year!

I have added bright, pastel and glitter pony beads, sports themed beads, stars and letters! I'm hoping this is enough for a good start and to get the students motivated. The possibilities of the pattern/design they can make are endless!
