My Students
"The IPOD is flashing," said one kindergarten student; and the other student replied, "That means it's charging." That's right, the IPOD was charging and ready to use; story time was about to start. I found an older model used IPOD on EBAY so that I could "play" stories for the kiddos. It's a hit!
As the school librarian, I see all of the students in the school so I have a pretty wide audience.
We have an 80% free and reduced lunch population. The students do not always have a wide exposure to language/sound/stories. Kids really need to be exposed to different ways language is used and I find that the absolutely LOVE when I find books with a CD. They love listening to the sound effects and dramatic readings by the authors and guest readers. The books that I am requesting (along with their CDs) that I will play on my IPOD, are very stimulating and help build the language portion of the brain. As a reading specialist I know how to select materials that will help the students become better readers.
My Project
Not only will these materials help the students by stimulating their "language centers" but the kids will have a ton of fun while singing, dancing, creating special movements, and repeating the sounds they hear as I help model and turn the pages. There is nothing more fun than kids hearing music when they sit down for story time. You cannot imagine how their eyes beam the minute they realize there is rhythm and music in the story they are about to hear, even if the music is just in the background. They immediately perk up and participate.
Many of the books on this wish list are primarily music and singing... the students will be invited "to make up moves" so that they can make the kinesthetic connection.
They love these sorts of books. The other books on the list are CDs to classic books that they love to hear over and over again. While I do read books to the students, they really love hearing the audio version because frequently it contains so much more than just one voice. Our students love to sing and dance during story time!
