My Students

"Reading is dreaming with open eyes." My kindergarten students are experts at dreaming big. I truly believe this is one of their best qualities. I have the unique opportunity to help their dreams come alive by helping them get lost in a good book. Quality read alouds can make this

With an enrollment over 500 students, my school is the biggest elementary school in our district.

The school is situated in the heart of the roughest neighborhood in the city. I have 26 kindergarteners in my class, many of whom are below poverty level. I love to see the excitement in their eyes when they come in every morning. My students are so eager to learn. Their eagerness makes me want to do everything I can for them so that they feel safe, happy, and respected within the walls of our room because unfortunately many of them are not able to feel this way in their homes. I have a group of talented children. All of my students are very different from each other. I have some kids that have a very outgoing personality that love to make the class laugh. A few of them are more introverted. Some of my students are great dancers while others are great drawers and painters. What all of my students have in common is that they all come to school each day with a positive attitude.

My Project

Finding a good read aloud creates an opportunity for much more learning than just listening to a good story. I was fortunate to listen to experts and get their advice on many purposeful read alouds. From these books, I will be able to create meaningful lessons that include active listening, close readings, collaborative book talks, book reviews, and guided writing. My students will be able to collaborate on many different aspects of the text. Within the fiction books they will be able to express their opinion while offering support. On the other hand, the non-fiction books will allow them to cite factual information from the text. These books will allow me to integrate many different genres into our daily lessons. I have chosen a wide variety of topics from the Underground Railroad to books filled with opportunities for imagining new and different worlds. I look forward to seeing improvement in literacy across the board from these books.

My students love learning and I am in a position to give all I have to foster that love.

Many of my students have been through more in their short lives than most adults will ever experience. If I am able to help them dream big and find joy in reading and in life, I will be able to change their lives even if only for a short time. Even more important, a love of reading may just awaken them to the reality of a world different from their own where they may find even greater opportunity.
