Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The majority of our students are limited English proficient (LEP). They are struggling not only in acquiring the basic English skills needed, but also in making sense of many academic subjects such as math. In order to help our students, we need to focus on building their English literacy levels.
Coming from a low-income community, our students undergo many stressors that impact their learning.
Our goal is to ease the learning process for them by engaging them in meaningful ways. We want learning to be a fun and safe place for all of our students.
My Project
Math is not an easy subject to understand for some students. Utilizing visual math books would allow students an opportunity to engage with the content and make sense of mathematics. We are a school with very limited resources and providing this math library will allow teachers and students to explore math through literature.
Read alouds will be incorporated into the math classroom and provide a cross-curricular approach to learning.
They will help introduce vocabulary, anchor learning, and set a foundation in order to build on a skill. Our goal is to provide our students an opportunity to build their reading skills while increasing their math knowledge. Math picture books would allow them this opportunity.
As a school with a high LEP (limited English proficient) population, these math picture books would provide visuals that are needed in order to make sense of mathematics. Students will enjoy reading these books while learning about math.
