Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever wanted to read a book and couldn't decode the words? My students with special needs face this problem every day. They are interested in books at their grade level, yet can't read them independently.
I am privileged to teach 4th and 5th grade students with multiple disabilities in a self-contained classroom.
Our school is located in a low-income area with a majority of second language learners. My students are greatly challenged when attempting to access grade level curriculum. Many struggle to retain concepts and therefore perform far below grade level. While they are eager to learn new things, they need additional supports to access the core curriculum and meet grade level standards.
My Project
My students are reading far below grade level due to their disabilities. While they are interested in the same books as their peers, they are unable to read them independently. Read-alongs will help them decode books of interest by allowing them to listen to the book as they read. Books on CD will build fluency and comprehension skills during independent work time. Given read-alongs, my students will have access to books based on their interests, not their reading level.
Giving students with special needs additional literacy resources, will help them access grade level curriculum.
These read-alongs will give them opportunities to independently access books of interest. This is especially important to keep them motivated and interested in reading more difficult literature. Please help my class gain fluency and comprehension skills. Thank you!
