This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am going to teach first grade students at a STEM-focused elementary school starting this fall. My approach is to teach STEM subjects throughout the school day, including time invested in all the literacy skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. I’m planning to create new reading & listening games with a life sciences focus. For example, I’m creating a “Build a Zoo” game. Players will need to learn about the animals in their zoo: where do they eat and sleep? How much space do they need? To win the game, they’ll need to include the best habitats based on their research. Future games will involve choosing the best pet, and visiting jungles, deserts, and prairies.
The Informational Text Read-Along Library sets will help my first-grade students build skills for reading and researching science topics, no matter what reading skill level they have.
I can design and make the games over the summer, but it’s vital to have the read-along libraries early in the fall to get the most benefit from the effort. I can deliver the hands-on work, but I need help getting my hands on the science books my first-graders need.
