My Students
Hard working , adaptable, compassionate, diligent and reliable are just a few words used to describe my students. Hearing those adjectives, it is hard to imagine they attend a school where 96% of students are classified as low income. Given that fact, they don't let it hinder their education.
I teach at a neighborhood school where low-income does not equate to low-academics.
Because of their dedication to education, I want to be sure that as they grow, more adjectives can be added to the list to describe them. There is no limit to who or what they can be. Ultimately, when they are asked to describe themselves, the first word spoken should be Inspirational.
My Project
Having a CD player, headphones and books on CD to listen to and read along with will help improve my students Reading skills. The majority of my students are non-readers. They lack the foundation skills needed to become fluent readers. While I work with students in small groups, other students will be able to work at the listening center building fluency and developing sight word and phonemic awareness. The wireless headphones will be most useful in allowing students to find a comfortable reading spot and position that will allow them to work best. The book sets are of varying levels, which gives students more opportunity to access text, at their own level, as well as above.
The donations to our project will help increase reading skills and provide the necessary materials for a daily listening center that will help improve reading skills.
Daily, my students work hard to identify letters and letter sounds. Being able to listen to the stories while they read-along will help give them the confidence to read aloud in whole group and small group settings. Having the listening center will help prepare them to be independent readers and ready to flourish in 2nd grade when they leave my class.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
