My Students

Our school has 790 students from diverse backgrounds and cultures and our school library serves them all! 22% of our students are low-income. We have a large population (9 classrooms) of students with disabilities. We also have many English Language Learners.

Our amazing and varied students energize me every day!

With 48% white, 20% Asian American, 20% Hispanic, and 10% two or more races, our school feels very diverse. It is wonderful! A highly capable program for 4th and 5th graders, and a parent-involvement program are part of our school as well.

These varied populations all utilize the library weekly for library lessons and materials. The library is open before school for students to read, browse, draw, and do activities such as games and puzzles. It is the heart of our school! The children are excited about reading and enjoy reading books aloud to each other.

My Project

Recently in our elementary school library, three girls asked me for a book with “scary language” because they are writing a legend of La Llorona. When I told them that Frankenstein was written by a woman, their eyes got big! They were surprised and amazed and wanted to know more! But as I was creating our Women’s History Month display, I noted that our collection is heavy on traditional biographies of men and that it lacked some of the amazing recent titles about women. It’s time to shake things up and bring more remarkable women to the forefront.

March is Women’s History Month!

But our library collection is short of exciting picture book biographies of notable women! What better way to inspire children to achieve, to make a difference and to work to their full potential than sharing the true stories of trailblazers before them. By sharing and promoting books about notable women, all our children will be reminded to persevere and to see the possible!

What achievements by women do we not know about because we don't have a book available? By having more high-quality biographies of women in our library, we will encourage everyone to do amazing things!
