My Students

Why do kids bully? How to you stand up to a bully? Do bullies ever stop bullying? These are important questions children often ask in the classroom. Why not read various books that address this devastating problem facing our students?

My students come from a mostly lower socioeconomic demographic, and many do not speak English at home.

Most of the students qualify for a free lunch, have limited resources at home, and stay at school until the early evening because of their hard working parents who are trying to make it. Our school does its best to inspire the kids and bring the curriculum to life. But the challenges of limited budgets and language barriers make that mission difficult.

My Project

The book "Bullying in Schools" will inform my students on this important topic. They will learn what bullying is, what it looks like, and what they need to do to be safe. It will provide my students the access to survive bullying behavior in school. My students' confidence will strengthen when other books on bullying will be read aloud to them and will be open for discussion. It is important for children to learn about bullying and how to prevent it from happening. The chapter books will be added to my collection of books on CD and will be used by my struggling readers who have no confidence in reading chapter books like the rest of the class. They will be able to enjoy listening to the stories. This will enable them to participate in classroom discussions more confidently. It is a way for them to blend into our discussions rather than getting looks from other students who know all the answers. As a teacher, I need to provide them access to thrive in classroom discussions.

The various books on bullying and the chapter book CD's will inspire my students to learn and participate with the whole group.

They will feel safe and will not be put down because they are not fluent readers! The multicultural books will enrich my students with the love of stories. They will learn to respect other cultures no matter how different they are. When children respect other cultures, there will be less bullying to go around.
