Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Telling my students to drop everything and read is a challenge when most of our library books are aged and culturally irrelevant. I want them to feel excited to read about topics that are current and connected to their everyday lives.
My students are amazing KIPPsters from the South Bronx.
They work extremely hard because they have an extended school day and homework in all of their classes every night. They learn about character and how important it is to be nice people in the world. My students inspire me every day to be a better person.
My Project
The Scholastic magazines I am requesting are connected to subject areas that students will encounter in all of their classes and to current events that impact their lives. Further, I am working to introduce more non-fiction reading materials this year and to build up their stamina for this type of reading during their free reading period will increase their comfort level with it when we encounter it in class. The magazines include catchy titles, compelling photos, and fascinating stories that will draw them in and make them want to read. I have been teaching for 10 years and I realize now that using non-fiction to critically engage students to think about the world around them is crucial.
We only know what we are exposed to.
In our everyday lives it isn't feasible to meet all of the people and go all of the places that make our planet turn and yet we all live together with its consequences. I want my students to be able to think outside of their neighborhood and begin to think proactively about their future and the role they want to play in making our country a better place. Exposure to the topics presented in these magazines will help them learn to think critically.
