Help me give my students the opportunity to LOVE to read in Spanish. The texts that they use to prepare for the AP exam are hard and dry. This variety of titles will get them excited to read!!!!

My Students

I teach in a Dual Language Immersion Spanish program. The students start learning Spanish in 1st grade and spend 50% of the school day in English and 50% in Spanish. When they get to 7th grade they begin preparing for the AP Spanish Exam that they will take in 9th grade. The texts that they have to study are very difficult. Because they are a cohort of students that are nearly bilingual they stay with the same students throughout their education. This dynamic means that students grow up sharing each other's experiences and histories and the students know each other very well. They enter the classroom as a united community and they support each other passionately.

My Project

These book titles will be used as a classroom library. Students can have a book assigned to them and each day they can read aloud for 5 minutes as a bell ringer to start the day. This emphasis on the importance of reading is essential and most of my students only read in Spanish during Spanish class.

During the pandemic, many students didn't have access to Spanish books and were reading only the textbook provided to them online.

Some students didn't complete any online work and so went almost a year without reading or writing any Spanish. This can put students behind program targets and can affect whether or not they will pass the AP exam in 9th grade as part of the trajectory of the program.

This class library can get kids interested in reading again! These book titles will give students voice and choice for their reading goals. Students are much more likely to enjoy reading when they can choose what they want to read. I know they will be so excited about this class library. And, what's more, this library will become a part of the classroom that future students can also enjoy.
