Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are just turning 5. For many of them, this is their first experience in a school setting. Some of the students have special learning needs, and some are learning English for the first time. The majority of their families live below the poverty line, and rely on our free meal plan for their child's breakfast and lunch.
Our school is a high poverty, Title I school, with high expectations for all.
Each day we practice letters, phonics and sight words. Little by little we are becoming proficient readers. A supply of early reading material is important for reading practice and for motivating my young readers. They enjoy all kinds of stories!
My Project
Our school will soon be visited by children's author Alexis O'Neill. With a selection of her books, we will be able to read ahead and prepare for her visit by becoming familiar with her titles. The Recess Queen, Estella's Swap, and Loud Emily are a few of her stories. These books are fun and colorful, and have wonderful vocabulary and rhythm of language.
I am requesting a classroom set of books written by Alexiz O'Neill.
We will listen to these books and make connections to the stories through drawings and journal writing. My students will learn new vocabulary and enjoy the colorful illustrations. They will develop language skills through the rhymes and the clever nature in which the stories are written.
Keeping a good supply of reading material is crucial to any classroom, particulary one with beginning readers. Please help bring these books to my students!
