This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember when you were a 6 year old and were beginning to recognize words out of a book? My students are just beginning to discover that they can pick up a book and read some of the stories on their own.
My students are first graders that I have taught since they were in Kindergarten.
They are such an amazing group of six year-olds. The school they attend is in a Title I district that is stricken with a high poverty community, and, about 97% qualify for the free lunch program. Nonetheless, they are excited to come to school each day ready and willing to please their teacher by giving it their all.
My Project
The carpet will provide a comfortable and cozy place for my students to go to and read the various selected books during independent reading time. They will be able to increase the state mandated reading requirements in preparation for promotion to the next grade level. These books will also be utilized to assess reading comprehension skills. They will also expose the children with opportunities they have limited or no access to.
