Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The social justices ideas instilled in me at a young age, through my credentialing program and teaching experience have motivated and inspired me to continue working with the urban population. I believe my role as educator is to be a catalytic teacher who encourages students to be active in their learning by making the material meaningful and relevant to their everyday lives.
The students I work with resemble me during my schooling years.
They are enthusiastic learners who can achieve great things with consistent love, support and academic challenges. Many of the students that attend my school are the first generation with the opportunity to graduate from high school and already have college in mind. These students are resilient and despite challenges they continue to impress those around them with their academic success.
This coming academic year, I have the pleasure of looping with my class. The students, their parents, and I are excited about working together in 5th grade. This past 4th grade year, we have grown attached to each other and most importantly, we have sparked a love for reading. In order to continue promoting this love we need several interesting books and book bins for the students.
My Project
I have the pleasure of looping with my students into 5th grade. This past year, I have worked very hard to assess student reading levels and to provide leveled books to all the students in order to continue to promote growth.
All of my students have shown growth in reading and are reading close to grade level or at grade level.
Some are even reading at a 6th grade level! I help the students track their growth and set reading goals. This holds them accountable to themselves and motivates them to continue reading. They look forward to our 40 minutes of daily reading time. During this time, they are given free choice in reading as long as they choose a book that is at their independent reading level.
In order to continue promoting this love for reading, I need to include new books into my classroom library for the students to read and bins to use for storage. Please help us buy purchasing books for my students to read.
