My students need 1 set of vocabulary stamps, 1 set of fluency cards, 1 set of reader's notebooks, 1 set of reader's response cards, 1 comprehension kit and 2 sets of nonfiction books to help enrich their learning.
"There is a brilliant child locked inside every student." -Marva Collins. That quote pretty much sums up a lot of what my project is about. I am requesting materials to challenge my students and push them into a different academic level with higher expectations.
I teach in a diverse neighborhood in Chicago.
Like many public schools, we are under resourced and under funded. Almost all of our school receives free or reduced lunch. I have 30 students in my kindergarten classroom that come from over 11 different countries. They are very excited about learning and happy to be in school. They are also at all different academic levels. I often teach students in small groups to target their needs. While I spend a lot of my time working with students who are below grade level, I decided that it is important for me to spend more time with those students who are above grade level.
My Project
Every year I have a handful of students who are very fast learners. Not only are they fast learners, but very bright students. I try my best to challenge them, but don't always have the right materials to push them farther. I am requesting a variety of literacy materials to challenge my students. A good teacher not only recognizes when a student achieves a goal, but pushes them into a deeper thinking and understanding. It is wonderful that I already have students who can read, but now it is time to work on their comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency. I have requested materials that will help with all of these essential literacy skills. Some materials include: a vocabulary stamp set, comprehension activity folders, and reader's response activity pads.
Children need to know that learning is everlasting, it never stops.
They may be able to complete the work at a kindergarten level, but that is not good enough. I want to challenge them and continue to teach them new things throughout the year. These are the students that absorb new information like sponges. Please help these bright young students achieve more and reach that next level of academic success.
