This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
With a class set of this book, students will have direct access to modern, relevant literature that directly comments on issues pertinent to them.
Students don't need centuries-old books about people that are nothing like them.
They need literature that can reach them where they're at and help them see that reading and writing are not archaic skills, but crucial to helping them process the world around them not directly accessible in their social bubble.
Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds is a story that will spark conversations about the best way to process emotions and societal pressures, even in the face of adversity - topics desperately needed by teenagers but lacking in educational literature. The story is extremely layered and deep, but also extremely accessible, even to those learning the language.
