My Students

My students are social, creative, and inquisitive. They take risks and work hard. They are helpful, kind, and curious. They love to learn new things, investigate, and explore. They are becoming voracious readers. It is all so exciting to see!

Our town is a rural mill town in Maine filled with good people and hard workers.

This being said, it is also an area of high poverty.

While our administration and local community is supportive of educational efforts, oftentimes there are not enough funds to go around. We need your help!

My Project

While my students read throughout the day, the bulk of the reading instruction takes place during our reader's workshop. At this time, students independently practice their reading skills in different centers - phonics, word work, listen to reading, writing, independent reading, and a technology center. They also have a small-group center where they work with me and other peers on a similar reading level to hone on specific reading skills and strategies. We call these our guided reading groups!

It is important that while I am meeting with guided reading groups, the students participating in centers are engaged and can work independently.

A major component of this is having materials accessible and organized for students to retrieve, utilize, and put away on their own. I am requesting phonics dice, reusable dry erase pockets, "whisper phones", and storage containers to house these materials along with the materials I already have. These new materials would minimize distractions and interruptions, and help my students to become self-directed learners. These materials would be used during guided reading groups as well. First grade is such a pivotal time for developing readers. These materials will be excellent additions to our reader's workshop!
