Reaching Reluctant Readers Through Graphic Novels

My students need engaging and child-friendly graphic novels for our classroom library.

My Students

My students love to read, particularly during our free-choice "dessert reading" time. Lately our small collection of graphic novels have been particularly in-demand. Even my most reluctant readers will happily reach for a comic or graphic novel.

Our student population is amazingly diverse: academically, ethnically, culturally, and economically.

Watching young people from such differing backgrounds come together to create a cohesive and cooperative classroom community is always an inspiration to me.

My Project

When students find their books truly interesting, they are much more likely to read with focus and stamina. And the more time they spend reading, the more quickly they progress as readers. Graphic novels not only capture my students' attention with action and humor, they also offer lots of picture support, which makes them an excellent choice for struggling readers. I want to build my collection of graphic novels so that my classroom library has an abundance of books that are appealing to young readers.

As a teacher, there is nothing more rewarding than inspiring a love of reading in my students.
