Every day my male students plunder through my book shelves looking for books that grab their attention and argue with each other over how long it is taking to read the one they are in line for. They want to read, so let's provide them the opportunity!!
The students at my school are from a lower poverty school district and from lower poverty homes.
They are also mostly struggling, reluctant readers. With that being said, we have started a school wide, daily reading initiative program that has sparked a love of reading in many of our students. However, much of our classroom reading material is out of date and not entertaining for the boys in our classrooms. Even with only a few, ragged copies of popular graphic novels and Greek mythology series, the boys still have a waiting list for books posted on the wall in my classroom. These boys deserve more, and better, reading materials.
My Project
The boys in my class were asked to compile a small list of books that they would like to see on our bookcase in our classroom. Although these books are either told from a boy's point of view or focused on problems a boy might face in his day to day life, the girls in my classroom will be welcome to read them as well. Having a variety of new, high interest books available with many of them being graphic novels, mythology based series, and urban fiction novels, many of my students will finally develop that spark for reading that so many of us educators love to see.
Small projects, like this one, are important.
I will continue to upload small projects to build our classroom library based on books requested by THE STUDENTS. Next, the girls get to make a list of books they wish to see on the shelves of the classroom bookcase. Make a difference by donating to a project chosen by the students!! Help our young men!!
