Reaching Readers While Out of School

Help me give my students books that they can keep at home during school closures!

My Students

My students are enthusiastic, wiggly, joyful, curious first graders. As our school is departmentalized I have the great privilege of teaching all 64 of them how to read! They continually ask questions that would stump even the most Renaissance of all Renaissance men. Questions like, "Do squirrels ever get tired of running around?" and "When were toilets invented?" and "Why does your hair look like that, Ms. Kelling?". Each day we share wonderful conversations about the books that we read together, the rhymes we notice within texts, and stand in awe of the trailblazers we study through books about George Washington Carver, Jaques Cousteau, Jackie Robinson and more. The world around them is shifting and changing, and their questions and curiosity do not end with the closures of schools. As I video chat with students every day, their desire to continue to grow and learn is apparent in every conversation.

My Project

Right now, my 64 first graders are out of school. While teachers work tirelessly to reach students at home, there are challenges every step of the way. As first graders, students are still developing their concept of print skills. This means that they need to spend time holding real books, practicing turning pages and moving their fingers across the page. While eBooks are available, it is VITAL that physical books are put into my students' hands.

In my classroom, we have invested a year in learning how to read and finding joy and love in the books that we read - it would be remarkably tragic to pause that growth because of school closures.

I know that this list may seem lofty, but in order for our growth to continue to happen over the next weeks, we need to have shared texts that we can talk about, read about, and write about together.

Help me make sure none of my students go without holding a book for the next few months. These books will be able to live with students and be sources of comfort during these especially scary times for our smallest citizens.
