Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a student, I would wiggle around in my seat, feeling my skin itch and tingle as the teacher lectured on. Even recently, I have felt this way during long trainings and meetings. Admit it, you have too! If sitting still all day is hard for adults, just imagine how challenging it is for students.

Over 90% of the students at our school receive free and reduced lunch.

Economically, they are disadvantaged and this social concern shows itself in their school readiness. The students that I work with specifically are children who have been identified as requiring special education. Their needs vary greatly and include learning disabilities, autism, ADHD, behavior concerns and more. The good news is that they are so much more than their needs. They are students with wonderful personalities, creative ideas, and seemingly endless jokes. With the right support they shine both academically and socially!

My Project

Some students seek additional sensory input and the intensity of this need can distract them from the learning opportunities around them. For those students who need to move, I have requested wiggle seats that are comfortable and safely allow them to move their bodies right in their classroom seats, without distracting those around them. For those students with tactile needs, I have requested objects with multiple textures that can be held and manipulated. For those students with behavior concerns, I have requested tubes filled with liquid and glitter that can calm and relax. These tools will provide my students with more complete access to the learning environment because their needs will be met.

With these tools, my students will see academic and social successes that have previously been out of reach.

As their needs are met, they will feel comfortable and safe in their classrooms. They will be prepared to learn and this could make all the difference.
