Reaching Every Reader: Small Groups in Kindergarten

My project needs a specially-designed small group instruction table, sturdy student chairs, a teacher chair and small group activities suitable for incoming kindergartners who have little experience with literacy.

This project is fully funded

I am privileged to teach kindergarten in a small K-6 school in central Alabama. My school serves a variety of different learners in kindergarten, from those who read fluently to those who have never held a book in their hands before. The purpose of my project is to build resources for those less experienced, at-risk students to best help them develop into confident and happy learners. Because of the high cost of consumable supplies that I must purchase each year, I am not able to afford these resources with my allocated instructional funds. The large range of ability and experience in students in my room sets the stage for organized and frequent small group instruction. After assessment, literacy skills are identified and children move in and out of groups to learn specific skills. For academically lower, less experienced students, these skills typically are working on writing, manipulating letters of the alphabet, playing rhyming and word games and looking at fun, sturdy and tactile books. To help my young, precious students fully get the practice they need with vocabulary building, fine motor skills, rhyming and reading, my students badly need these high quality, sturdy, interesting materials! My homemade materials are falling apart! Thank you for any assistance you can provide!!
