This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Getting middle schoolers excited about reading can be a challenge. I believe half of the challenge is finding the right book. I've found a book that has lots of suspense; boys especially enjoy this book. I would love to share this novel with my students.

I serve students in an area that is about 30 minutes west of Phoenix.

My school has a population that is primarily Hispanic and is also low income. These students can be successful given the right tools and support systems. The school I teach in is a K- 8th grade facility.

My Project

I try to focus my Reading class around reading that occurs in real life. As adults, we don't curl up on the couch and open a Reading basal. This set of the novel Weasel will allow students the opportunity to read in small groups, have literary discussions, and will be used by the teacher to facilitate student learning. They will learn about the Native Americans and their removal from land in the Ohio Valley during the 1800's. It is full of suspense, twists and turns, and students often don't want to stop reading. I hope my students who don't like to read will realize that they actually do like reading when they choose a high quality text.

Donations to this project will make an incredible impact on students.

Using novel reading has many advantages over the traditional basal. Students are excited to read novels, so they are more motivated to learn. Also, a basal only includes short stories or excerpts of books. Having students read novels allows them to see characters develop over time, they receive a better understanding of plot, and dig deeper into literary elements.
