Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach mathematics in a high needs high school - over 70% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. We serve a diverse population consisting of many recent immigrants from all over the world. Working in one of the last large schools (over 4000 students) in the Bronx, I've always had a lot of competition for resources. But I've found that the struggle is worth the effort - I see how quickly my students respond when I introduce technology-based teaching techniques, and I see their test scores improve. One of my goals for this year is to become more effective at differentiating instruction. I want to be able to reach all students; not just the middle or top thirds. I need to explore efficient ways to present the same material to different students in different ways. One way I'd like to try this is to present alternate instruction via podcast. There's a wealth of support materials for our curriculum, both from the textbook publishers and from other sources. If I had a means to deliver such a podcast, I could target certain students, while the rest of the class continues with more traditional instruction. To accomplish this, I need an iPod with a fairly large screen, so a couple students can watch and listen to a video lesson at the same time. This is a pilot project. If it is effective, I'll write proposals for a couple additional units. My main objective is to help all my students meet and exceed state standards. Your generous contribution will help me use class time more effectively, and consequently help me achieve my main objective. Thank you very much for considering this proposal.
