This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a collaborative, diverse group of 5th graders who are learning about robotics through Project Lead the Way. My kids come from a low socioeconomic area with working class parents. My students' families are working such long hours to provide for their children. As a result, they have limited time to provide scientific experiences with their child and the students would benefit greatly from more hands on scientific opportunities.

As a teacher, it brings me great joy to say that all of my students come to school each morning eager to learn despite their difficult home lives.

My Project

Our school has been a STEAM (Science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) Academy for the last 7 years. The students have focused on applying the engineering design process through learning about robotics. They have built chassis to complete a challenging task of removing hazardous waste from a nuclear site while avoiding contaminating the water source.

This trip to the space center would give our students the invaluable opportunity to see the real world application of robots.

The Mars simulation mimics the real Mars rovers by collecting samples and bringing them back to home base.

Thank you so very much for your consideration and giving 24 future young scientists the trip of a lifetime!
