Help me give my students an assortment of drums for our brand new mental health & drumming groups. These will also be used for individual support with individual students on my caseload.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I have started the process of facilitating small groups for our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students for the 24-25 school year. In addition to various activities, we often talk about feelings related to mental health, grief/loss, navigating relationships, healing, etc.. Before becoming a school social worker at River City, I ran drum-centered afterschool programs for a great, local non-profit in the Richmond area named ART 180. After two years of running groups at River City, I've realized that we're missing one thing: Drums!
Powerful emotions such as anger, grief, sadness, and pain surrounding trauma, are often released in drum circles - When these intense emotions can be processed and released in a safe and productive environment, the therapeutic process allows healing to occur organically.
Drumming produces a natural, relaxing response in the body and creates a calming effect on the mind. Drum circles create a sense of community by coming together to create music for the sake of release and healing. Uniting in this cause helps individuals feel part of a larger group and create a connection with something bigger than themselves. Please consider donating!
Approximately 60% of our student population is Hispanic. A large part of this community are newcomers and English language learners. I look forward to this project helping to create a sense of belonging for these students in addition to bridging the language gap in groups with students who also speak English. Rhythm and drumming are a universal language that will benefit our entire student population, including our Spanish speaking community. Thank you for considering donating to this project!
