This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Today, global literacy statistics paint a gloomy picture. Illiteracy threatens over 785 million adults worldwide, translating into one in every five people on the planet, with either no or just basic reading skills. Building reading skills in early grades is vital for a lifetime of success.
Unfortunately, in Illinois, we are facing a budget deficit in our educational funding.
We have an increase in students in the classroom, but not the resources that should go along with it.
I teach in a predominantly Hispanic and African-American community. The majority of our students come from low-income families. I teach to students that do not have computers in their homes. I have many students who are eager to learn and their energy is contagious.
My Project
This is where I seek your help. Headsprout is an online kids reading program for K-5 students that provides teachers with a individualized reading solution. With Headsprout, kids learn to read and read to learn. Early readers interact with engaging online episodes and read printable eBooks designed to instill key reading fundamentals like phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and beginning comprehension.
Once readers have demonstrated a solid grasp of the basics, they move on to episodes created to teach the four primary components of reading comprehension: finding facts, making inferences, identifying themes, and learning vocabulary in context.
Today’s student is inundated with technology at an early age, and oftentimes proficient at using it before stepping foot into a school classroom.
Technology is interesting to children, and it is engaging. Getting students engaged is the first step in teaching them to read and I believe Headsprout program will help me achieve my goal.
