My Students

How you ever felt passionate in your math class? That is what I thought. Our students were fired up this spring when learning of the problem with single use water bottles filling our landfills. We are going to fan those flames when implementing a recycling program.

I work with 150 of the most caring 6th through 8th graders in the state.

Growing up in a rural area, my students enjoy close family ties and know a strong work ethic. The area is high poverty, but it does not keep them from being good mentors to their younger siblings and cousins on our K-8 campus. While there are many positives, there are few opportunities for exposure to the world beyond our small community.

My Project

The students will embark on a year-long service learning project in our math class. To do so they need recycling bins, wastebaskets, containers, boxes, and liners. My students will run a school-wide recycling program that will focus on reducing the use of single-use plastic water bottles. They will be collecting, sorting, and recycling paper, bottles, and cans from every classroom on campus, while sharing their knowledge with the whole school. In the 6-8th grade classes, we will reduce the use of plastic water bottles by giving every student a reusable water bottle. In math, they will chart the use of their reusable water bottles, along with the total pounds of recycling collected. The culminating task will occur in May when the students build a volume model to represent their contribution to reducing waste.

This project came from student interest in recycling.

The project will require the students to engage in mathematical modeling while empowering them to be the agents of change. It will give our students an opportunity to see the impact that they can have on their world.
