Do you remember when the whole world was a question? Our students are thirsty for knowledge of the world beyond our classroom walls, but they have to wait in line for a chance to use our limited technology to seek answers to life's questions.
Our students are a curious, intelligent bunch who are always asking "what's next?" They are a diverse group, with four different languages spoken as the primary language at home amongst them.
They are eager to share what they know about the world and to absorb what we offer about our own experiences.
When technology is involved in a lesson or students get a chance to use one of our computers, they are ecstatic. Some of them have computers at home and are eager to share what they've learned there, others have limited experiences and are eager to absorb and experiment with the technology in our room. They are often asking us if it is their "computer day" because they have a question they can't wait to research or a web site they can't wait to try.
My Project
Our school works hard to support our students in being able to ask and answer meaningful questions and to think deeply about the world around them. We use technology daily as a teaching tool, but we also want our students to have the access to technology that builds independence and makes technology truly a learning tool. Shifting the ownership to the students is difficult with only three computers in the room.
We are asking for a tablet computer, which will provide an additional computer for our students to do research, play educational games, and become familiar with cutting edge technology. News magazines for each student will allow students to become familiar with the world around them and to develop cultural literacy that will help them take their place in today's global learning community.
When students have control over the way they learn and what they produce, they invest more deeply in their learning.
By providing our students the tools they deserve, we are creating opportunities for students to engage in the classroom in meaningful ways that translate to the "real world." It is our responsibility to help our students prepare for not only the technology-rich world of today, but also the possibilities of tomorrow.
