My students need emergent level graphic novels such as Benny and Penny, Phoebe and the Unicorn, and Bird and Squirrel to continue to foster their life-long love of reading.
Deep in the heart of the Silicon Valley rests a beautiful campus full of happy energetic students who come to school each day eager to learn in a meaningful learning environment. The students at my school inspire me to create lessons and be an innovative teacher that will spark their imaginations, add to their life schema, and help prepare them for the world of the 21st century. I am proud to help students do their best...whether it is learning the language, picking up comprehension skills that will enhance the reading experience, solving rigorous math problems, expressing themselves through the arts, experimenting to challenge an idea, or having fun throughout the experience.
My Project
I grew up reading chapter books of all different sorts, but it was the comic book shop that held my interest, my imagination, and the spark of my desire to read at any opportunity that I could. Reading would have even been more appealing if graphic novels were more prevalent when I was a kid. Graphic novels are the perfect blend of beautifully drawn art and graphic design mixed with captivating storytelling and wonder. A few months ago, I set out to provide my class with a new genre to read..."THE GRAPHIC NOVEL". Thanks to DonorsChoose.org, I was able to do so... to a huge degree. What I was unable to do because I did not expect it, was to provide graphic novels to a population that often gets overlooked... my beginning and emerging readers. Most graphic novels have complicated storylines and require a great deal of schema to understand and are never thought about when choosing books for beginners to practice with. Today one of these students read the only phonics based graphic novels I have with such enthusiasm and pride. He read it to me again and asked if I could get more. This was the first time he showed any interest in reading of any kind. How could I say NO? So here goes... my humble request for anyone who would care to help me bring more amazing stories to more amazing kids. Thank you!
Since my last DonorsChoose.org project (Graphic Novels In The Classroom) the emergent readers in my classroom have been begging to read graphic novels of their own at an appropriate level.
