My Students

I teach fourth grade at a small neighborhood school on Chicago's west side. 85% of our student body is low income and 41% have limited English skills. Many of my students are English Language Learners and only speak Ukrainian.

Teaching in an urban school district that is facing a fiscal crisis makes obtaining classroom necessities and supplies difficult.

While our school receives some community support, we still struggle to give our students the supplies and tools they need to succeed.

My Project

"I'm sorry you can't read right now" is not something I ever thought I would say as a teacher! My students LOVE to read! I have never had a class who love books more than these fourth graders.

If they could, my students would spend an entire day just independently reading!

Each student is reading about two chapter books a week. Which means, we need more books.

Many of my students are reading above grade level and our level T-Z bins are constantly empty so we need books and bins. Research shows that students increase their reading skills when they are able to practice reading strategies at their level. Providing a library full of high quality literature it will ensure that my students grow as readers and learners.

Most of the books on this list came from our classroom book wish list, so I know that these books will be reread again and again, which means my students will continue their love of books!
