This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Remember how much you loved being read to as a child? Listening centers can provide a wonderful opportunity for children to hear their favorite books read aloud again and again. This is essential for my students since they often do not have the opportunity to be read to at home.
My school is nestled in a large urban community with a diverse population.
Most of my students come from homes with incomes below the poverty line. My students come to school eager to learn and grow, but unfortunately lack many of the necessary skills to be successful in first grade. Their literary deficit is mostly attributed to economic hardships and language barriers. I strive to make my classroom a safe and caring learning environment in which all children are given the same opportunity to be successful.
My Project
Differentiating instruction ensures that each child receives the specific education they need. In order for this to occur small groups are a vital part of my daily instruction. Working in small group centers allow children to work closely with the teacher and independently on essential literacy skills. One of the most beneficial activities in my classroom is the listening center. Hearing a book read on CD helps children see how the words on the page can come alive in a fluid, expressive way. It helps them focus on the sounds of words read without interruption and provides a model of fluent reading. This in turn increases independence, engagement, and literacy skills.
With funding be cutting on a daily basis and class sizes ever increasing it is very difficult to fund extra educational materials not provided by the district, such as books on CD.
This project is important to my classroom, because it will provide every child an opportunity to be read to. Reading aloud is widely recognized as the single most important activity leading to literacy acquisition.
