My Students

Most of the students attended the same elementary school and have been friends for several years. To them, their classmates are close like their family. They support and help each other along the way in their journey of learning. They are creative, innovative, and curious. Our school is a Title I school. Many of our students come from low-income families; all of our students receive free lunch. Many of them will hopefully be the first in their families to go to college. Over half of them do not speak English at home, and for many, English is not their first language. Most of them are ELLs (English Language Learners). The diverse student population helps the students to embrace differences and bring in learning opportunities to one another.

My Project

Ratios and proportion has a lot of useful applications in life. One of the applications is in the area of food. Our students will need these skills in their life. Through this unit, we will explore unit prices through different sizes of drinks available at different stores, and to discover is bigger always better.

Please help us to make math alive in the classroom!

The students will then become entrepreneurs in the classroom and figure out what are the best ratios between tea bags and water, as well as the sugar level. Students will design what the best tasting bubble tea and come up with a plan, including calculation of cost and profit. Students will have a chance to make that recipe with the materials in the classroom, to see their math come alive!
