This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the opportunity of a lifetime- to help a class of 9th grade students turn into highly successful teenagers. It is my fifth year teaching in a large comprehensive high school in a high risk urban environment- the kind where my students walk through multiple gang territories just to get to and from school each day. I just graduated my first senior class this spring and I will be getting a class of 9th graders that I will teach for the next four years until they too have the opportunity to graduate. This is no small task. Over 50% of the students in their class will not graduate; many will go to jail, have babies, or lose their life to gangs and violence. I want my freshman seminar class to defy the odds, and I need your help.
I feel like I will be raising 30 teenagers at one time. Many students live in single parent households, raise their younger brothers and sisters or their own children, and face many challenges each and everyday that I couldn't even imagine at their young age. They do not get the guidance that they need to be successful. For some students, school is the only place they can be heard. They are struggling to get by when they should be striving to succeed.
As their advisor for the next four years, I am going to be a solid rock support and intelligent adult they can lean on and look to for guidance. But I cannot do it alone. Education is the best weapon in my opinion. Therefore, I want to supply them with the resources and tools they can use in the process. I believe that the book "Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens" will allow me to help my students be the best they can be and develop the skills that will help them be successful in life.
As a freshman advisor, I have many tasks in front of me. I have to help my students improve their reading and writing. I have to help them pass a state mandated test in order to graduate. I have to teach them a skill set that includes reading, note taking, and math. My goal is for EACH ONE of my seminar students to not only graduate high school, but to attend a four year college. In a community such as theirs, this will be a major accomplishment for each and everyone of my students. Starting off their 9th grade year with your support will put us in the right direction. You will make it possible for my students to have a chance at a future. Thank you for considering my proposal.
