Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Everyday is an adventure in our classroom! Students are moving from center to center, learning to write, read, sing, dance, explore...learn! I'm tapping into all their senses to help them take ownership of their learning and transform them into readers!

My active kindergarten/first grade students love to learn!

This is a group that tries their best! Few came in knowing their alphabet and sounds, and slowly but surely they are all on their way to becoming readers! Some students had pre-school experience and some did not. About 1/3 of my students are English Language Learners, so I do a lot of oral and vocabulary development by providing sentence stems and using Talk Moves such as repeating, revoicing, and extending wait time across curriculum to practice listening and speaking. We also do skits, especially skits that involve developing social skills. My students love to perform in front of the class! My elementary school is a Title 1 school located in urban Highland Park, Los Angeles, where I grew up. The majority of our students are on free and/or reduced lunch.

My Project

A small, colorful rug in the library will make it more warm and inviting. They've been sitting on a cold floor when reading at the library. A new easel will be used daily during center time. In this small setting where students tend to be more focused, I will guide my students through blending lessons where I spell out letters, do sentence writing with them, review high-frequency words, and give them immediate feedback. Students will be able to see letters and words more clearly on an easel at their center than from across the room on a large white board. Students will use the Write and Wipe pockets to help prevent the enormous amount of writing paper we have been going through! Using dry erase markers on these clear protectors enable them to reuse a sheet over and over. We are trying to minimize the amount of paper that we consume in the classroom while maximizing learning.

Your donations will undoubtedly support my students as readers.

Sitting on a rug to read, reading from an easel in close proximity instead of a large white board across the room, and using Write and Wipe boards may be small changes, but small changes contribute to the long-term growth of my students' learning. Some of my students will be the first in their family to become readers, and I am determined that 100% of my students will read! Your donations will support me in reaching my goals!
