Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you know what it's like to enter a new country and school without speaking the language?
Many of my students are new to the United States with limited English acquisition.
These students are called SLIFEs (students with limited or interrupted formal education) and often are very nervous about being in a new country. School is overwhelming however, my students are very dedicated to their studies and strive to do the best they can with limited English. These students will go to tutors, ask for help, as well as seek extra help (on their own time) through paraprofessionals in the building who assist with their work. These dedicated students can also have jobs outside of school (up to 40-50 hours a week!) and work to support their families while attending classes during the day.
My Project
In current times, it is difficult to engage students both in person and virtually. Part of our curriculum focuses on ecology where students learn about natural habitats, climate, growth and limitation factors. This project, if funded will provide students with three different ecosystems that foster growth.
All ecosystems will foster life, which will allow students to create a greater connection to their learning.
Students will take care of these ecosystems by feeding, measuring, and collecting additional data to support the cycle of life and maintain the specific habitat.
In addition, taking care of the ecosystems will foster Social Emotional Learning (SEL) which is a large focus for the school year. These skills will allow students to learn how to nurture for the greater good. The students will continue to learn compassion and empathy not only for others, but for organisms that cannot express their feelings. With lack of contact with their peers due to current conditions, it is imperative that we continue to foster compassion, kindness and empathy in our teaching practices.
