Raising Digital Citizens Through Chromebooks!

My students need Chromebooks and earphones so they are able to conduct research, build their language proficiency, and develop digital literacies.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. J.'s classroom raised $1,488

My Students

English learners in my classes are industrious, curious, and grateful for any and every opportunity to learn. Each of these students has his/her own unique set of learning needs. With consistent access to Chromebooks in our classroom, I can better differentiate instruction to meet each child's needs.

My fourth and fifth grade students, as a group, speak twelve different languages, have varying degrees of proficiency in the native languages, and are all English learners.

They have varying degrees of proficiency in English and are all required to learn a new language while simultaneously learning science, math, social studies, and ELA. It's a lot of hard work for everyone! Some of my students have access to computers and Internet outside of school; these students diligently make use of those resources to extend their learning. However, due to our limited access to computers during the school day, it is difficult to model web-based assignments/activities to be completed at home or to integrate technology within the classroom. Our school is a Title I school with over 800 students. Over 35% of those students are English learners. At this time, we do not have sufficient access to technology in order to foster students' digital literacy or to enhance their learning of content and language.

My Project

My students will use the Chromebooks and earphones for a wide range of activities. The Chromebooks will at times serve as a literacy center, where students can login to their Raz-Kids accounts and listen to and read leveled fiction and non-fiction texts. At other times, students will use the Chromebooks to conduct web-based research. Students will regularly use Chromebooks to build and update their individual wiki-based student profiles. In addition to the variety of web-based applications students will use, they will also build expertise in using various Google apps for managing their own learning, will engage in a year-long digital citizenship curriculum that will teach and put in practice 21st century Skills, and--we hope--will participate in cross-cultural digital exchanges with native English speaking peers in other schools. Students will build their proficiency in English, expedite vocabulary acquisition and increase depth of knowledge, learn research skills, and have fun.

This project will enable my students to engage materials and learning tasks that are differentiated to suit their individual learning needs.

Students will also engage in meaningful communicative tasks, which will deepen their understanding of American culture and the English language. Students will also explore, through practice, notions of digital citizenship while building their 21st century skills. Finally, students will learn how to structure their time online so it's productive and safe.
