Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are building a multicultural community, and to do so, we need to read nonfiction books about community leaders, other communities, and just learn how to find our community on the map!

We are at a 96% free and reduced lunch Title 1 turnaround school.

This school is a part of the Race to the Top program, and my students are working hard to meet high literacy goals. Even though my students face many challenges before they get to school, they are up to the challenge of working hard to make it to college.

My Project

Because of the focus on literacy, we don't have a Social Studies block, so I need to incorporate as much Social Studies as I can into literacy. I need some nonfiction books to make that happen! The books I have chosen will introduce them to leaders from all different communities as well as show them how to find themselves on a map. We will also receive a Weekly Time for Kids to practice reading nonfiction on a weekly basis and keep up with current events.

Social Studies education is now more important than ever.

I want to inspire my students to become leaders, and also instill in them an understanding of people who think differently than they do, so that when they become our leaders, they will be able to work collaboratively to make our country a better place.
