My Students

I teach at an elementary school in the heart of "Cajun Country" where we encourage students to become active learners and accountable for their academic success. We are a French Immersion school which is also Title 1. Our students come from diverse backgrounds but all share a common goal to help our school progress from "good to great." My first graders arrive each year ready to learn how to read. My focus is not just to teach them how to read but to become readers and leaders.

My Project

Here in South Louisiana, rainy day recesses tend to be the norm during the school year, especially at the start of the school year. Already this year there have been several consecutive days in which my first graders were not able to go outside for recess.

Having some good old- fashioned board games will give my students opportunities to improve their social skills as they take a break from learning and interact with classmates in a competitive, fun manner.

As they engage in play with Candyland, Connect Four or Trouble, they will not only have some well-deserved fun but will exercise their mind as they strategize against their competition.
