Rainy Day Recess Games and Building for Young Engineers

My students need board games (Mousetrap, Cooties, Operation, Twister, Sorry! Ker Plunk, Connect 4, etc.), timer, and LEGOS to enhance team building and communication during rainy day recess. They also need a variety of LEGOS to engage in engineering.

My Students

My students love to play different activities with one another; however, they don't have access to a variety of materials in the classroom. Who doesn't love to build with LEGOS? I would love to give my students the opportunity to learn how to follow directions and build things that interest them.

My students are respectful to their peers and adults; they are hard workers, and they have huge hearts.

They are eager to learn new content and love to play games with their peers. Thirty-five percent of students are on free or reduce lunch. Every student deserves a chance to be able to have materials like these in their classroom.

My Project

These games(Mousetrap, Cooties, Operation, Twister, etc.) and timer will be mostly used during rainy day recess. Right now my students have the option between Chess, Chutes and Ladder, Mancala (with no marbles), drawing, and reading. We don't have other games in the classroom right now, and I would love to give them more options during recess time. It has been raining a lot in our rainy city, and students have been cooped up inside all day. It would be great to give them more activities to do in class during their choice time. These materials would also be used during the students free time (choice time), which happens once a week for 20 minutes. The students get bored of playing the same things every day, and it would be great to bring new games that they many have never seen into the classroom and teach them games that I played as a young girl. The LEGOS would be used during math choice time and science. The LEGOS will be used for students to explore building and following directions, which is a difficult skill.

I remember most of these games when I was a little girl and I loved playing with them.

I brought Chutes and Ladders into the classroom recently and non of my students had ever played it before, it blew my mind and at this point I realized many of these great classic games my students probably have never played or heard of them before. I had to try to bring them into the classroom and teach students how to play during recess time.
