Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach pre-kindergarten at a Title 1, low income school. Over 97% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. More than 60% speak English as a second language. Many of the students in our urban neighborhood do not have the opportunity to play outside because parents work late or are concerned about safety.

"Today will be an inside day." Those are dreaded words to an early childhood teacher, especially at my school. The pre-kindergarten students do not go to the gym with the P.E. teacher. When there is inclement weather, we have the option of taking the children to a multipurpose room. However, there are not appropriate materials for our pre-k students to use.

This project includes a variety of materials that can be used in the multipurpose room or in the classroom during inside recess days. Outdoor play is a critical time to build gross motor (large motor) skills. Children must have these large motor skills to build fine motor skills for writing, cutting, etc. Providing opportunities to move, even during inside recess days, will help my students build large motor skills. It will also provide an outlet for excess energy, help meet individual students' sensory needs, and reduce behavior issues (due to lack of movement). Many of the materials provide other learning opportunities including color recognition, alphabet recognition, and counting practice.

Your help will ensure that my students have access to appropriate materials that encourage them to move, even if we can not go outside. Thank you for helping use chase away the "rainy day blues" and making a difference in the lives of the pre-kindergarten students in my class!
