My classroom is a collection of significantly diverse learners who each have very special qualities requiring 1:1 to 1:3 instruction in the areas of academics, functional skills, behavioral skills, and social skills. The majority of my students require frequent sensory breaks and lack communication skills needed to express their wants and needs. Noises can be difficult so having a calming environment is beneficial to them and hands-on learning is beneficial.
My classroom consists of 12 wonderfully, energetic students with Autism and I just found out I will have kindergarten and 1st grade online!!
Technology is essential in my classroom and my students will be 1:1 this year with iPads. All of my students come from a low socio-economic background, so they often have difficulties acquiring therapeutic items which help fulfill their sensory needs. More than 50% of the population receives free school lunch.
My Project
STEM is an important part of learning for students of all ages. My project will allow students to use critical thinking skills to build many things. Students will be able to construct various buildings and explore architecture through a beautiful display of color. These Rainbow Blocks will be an exciting addition to our wooden block center. Students must problem solve how to build with different shapes and how to make a strong foundation. The various types of blocks will allow students to make connections that different materials can be used to construct different things. The natural blocks are a fantastic way to connect to nature and build tree houses and other abstract items. The Rainbow Block will add color and excitement to their wonderful creations! A building block center will help increase their oral language. Students will have to describe the types of structures built and the materials used. These blocks will support students in problem-solving strategies as they will work to find out which blocks fit best to create each masterpiece while working on fine motor skills. Lesson plans can be created for students to learn how to pre-plan their structures using drawings. Students can use blocks to create patterns, practice counting, and learn positional words.
More than half of students from low‑income households
