Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In our 5th grade classroom 2 of our units focus on ecosystems and water.

We have one compost bin that is a tumble model and the compost bin included in this project will enable my students to conduct outdoor investigations.

We would use their research to compare compost bin designs and propose improvements.

The rain barrel would be utilized during our water unit. Students study how we make water healthy for all living things. Students study different water samples and learn about how to test for matter that we can't see. Students research and develop ways to filter out the unhealthy materials. The lesson overlaps with our ecosystem unit as we bring it back to water being crucial for all living things - especially plants.

The 2 rain barrels would allow students to conduct investigations on the water, temperature and volume of the water in the barrel over time. Students would use this data to compare designs to learn about phase changes of matter and how to limit evaporation. All of this would connect to our water cycle unit as well as our ecosystem unit.
