Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I currently teach first grade on the Southside of Chicago at a Title I school. I have 28 students enrolled in my classroom. The students mostly come from low-income homes and according to the Illinois State Board of Education 98% of the students at my school were low-income students in 2008-2009.
All my students are English Language Learners (ELLS), which means that they speak a second language at home that is not English. My students are not only learning 1st grade content, but they are also learning a new language. So, as you can see they are hard workers! Their reading comprehension and fluency would be improved in English if they were able to practice and listen to English using an interactive program like Radius. Fortunately, through a previous proposal we received the Radius Interactive Learning System because of generous donors. But, now we need the audio cards and CDs which are sold separately. Unfortunately, my school does not have the funds to purchase these cards and CDs for my students.
I really feel that having the Radius Interactive Learning System will help my students reading comprehension and fluency. Most importantly, it will help them learn English and gain new vocabulary. With this program the students slide a card into the learning system, then listen and follow along to complete fun phonics activities independently. Kids can even record and play back their responses. The system works with CDs and cards that feature step-by-step phonics activities that provide instant audio and visual reinforcement.
With your generosity, we can get three sets of audio cards and CDs for the Radius Interactive Learning System! These sets include Long Vowels, Short Vowels, and Blends and Digraphs. Reading can unlock many doors for my students and give them opportunities for a bright future. Please help foster a love of reading for my first graders; it is the best gift they can receive!
