Radium Girls: An Important Lesson in Science and History

Help me give my students a class set of The Radium Girls by Kate Moore to help incorporate literacy into my science class.

My Students

My students are from a rural neighborhood in Oklahoma. The community is very low income, as over 60% of our students are on free/reduced lunches, which then translates to many challenges they have to face in regards to school and home life.

My middle school is an extremely small rural school of around 125 students.

My goal is to give them the opportunities that will help them succeed when they move on to high school and beyond.

My Project

The Radium Girls is a captivating and important story that weaves together lessons in history, literacy, ethics, and science. One of the biggest struggles that I have in my science classroom is the challenge of making science engaging and relaying to students just how important it is in everyday life. The Radium Girls will help engage students by helping to guide discussions about ethics and the science concepts involved. Many of my students struggle to enjoy reading, so I hope that this will help to incorporate more literacy into my class in an interesting way.
