Radio Flyer Bookmobile

My students need the Radio Flyer as an in-school bookmobile to use between our 5 second grade classrooms.

My Students

Pretend that today you are 7 years old. It is your favorite day of the week. The Red Flyer Bookmobile will be in your classroom. When it comes you get to pick out 2 books and take them home all week. Dinosaur books, Junie books, Poetry books...this is a literacy-rich and motivating classroom.

My students are second graders.

They are learning to love reading at school, but when they go home they have nothing to read with a family member. We have 5 second grades in our school, it is a very diverse group of students. Along with the English written books, I am building a balanced book collection,the bookmobile will be equipped with Spanish and Chinese books this year for our ELL students.

My Project

The Radio Flyer will be the bookmobile for our students to use daily. Each day of the week the bookmobile will go to an assigned teacher for that day. All the students are taught to be 'bookmobile librarians' and every week 4 students in a class are honored with that job. Each classroom student may checkout 2 books from the bookmobile. The next day the bookmobile will travel to the next classroom and 2 librarians check in books from the previous week and 2 librarians check out books for the current week. This continues all week through the five classrooms. Being able to transport our books to our students, giving them the choice of books to read, teaching them the responsibility of taking care of the books and returning them on time are lessons in responsible citizenship and is an important purpose of school. But our bookmobile's number one purpose is to involve the students and their family members into reading together.

Most classroom have a classroom library, but schools don't have a bookmobile.

There will be special weekly projects associated with our wagon. The first week reading aloud 'Friday My Radio Flyer Flew', another week (math measurement week) learning 'diameter' using the wagon's wheels. I can only imagine the excitement on the kids faces the day the wagon appears in their classroom. Providing the wagon for our bookmobile will give the kids the excitement, motivation,I hope, passion for reading.
