My 30 students each needs their own copy of "Charlotte's Web" to follow along during a read aloud.

My Students

The best way to engage young readers is for them to be able to hold an actual book in their hand. As I read Charlotte's Web (animal voices included) the students are all highly engaged. Our library has 3 copies of the book. My students fight over the books so they can follow along as I read.

Just beginning this new school year, I can tell my students are eager to learn.

We are a large elementary school in a high poverty city in Massachusetts. Many of my students do not have books at home. Most of their exposure to literature happens at school. My class consists of reading levels from K-3. During this read aloud, everyone is on a level playing field.

My Project

If each child could have his/her own copy of Charlotte's Web, I could turn a read aloud into a shared reading where the students could also take turns reading aloud. This book exposes city kids to a new world of rural life on a farm. The vocabulary is amazing! This is one of my favorite activities I do because the students are truly riveted by the story. They ask questions and participate in discussions. Every year, a group of children (myself included) cry at the sad conclusion of the story. If that is not evidence of students engaged in learning, I don't know what is!

Anyone who thinks books will become (are) obsolete has never seen a child engaged in a good book.

The difference between listening to a book read to you (which is fun) and actually holding the book and following along is HUGE!
