This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In grade school, I remember never being interested or good at reading. I believe this stems from reading being taught in a rote, uninteresting manner. I never found my love for reading. I do not want my students to have the same opinion I did about reading. I want them to be excited about reading!
My students come to school every day eager to learn.
They are always asking questions, wanting to read, and learn about everything! I have a variety of personalities and learners. I have students who are gifted and need to be challenged every day. I also have students who are in need of intervention and constant assistance. Because of this, it is important to have a variety of resources for each type of learner. With a variety of resources, I am better able to reach those visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile learners. However, with the economy and socio-economic status of the district I teach in, we do not have the financial opportunities to purchase these resources.
My Project
With the reading resources I have requested, I plan to use them to help inspire a love of reading. I truly believe that in order for kids to retain and comprehend information better, they need to think that they are having fun. I am requesting listening center resources. We need a CD/cassette tape player for listening to and enjoying some of our favorite stories. I am also asking for 2 personal CD players and 2 cassette players so students are able to record their own stories on tape and CD. To go along with these, I am also requesting 4 new headphone sets. I have found that kids get really excited when they can hear their own voice reading a story and other kids love to listen to their classmates as well! Some of the other resources I am asking for are 1 grammar, sentence/paragraph building, and writing games. I think writing is an important part of a child's education. I am also asking for 2 reading fluency activities to help students practice their reading skills in a fun way.
I truly believe that your view and opinion on reading begins in your childhood and your reading experience.
As an adult who grew up not liking to read, I am determined to make sure my students find their love for reading when they are young. I not only want to instill a love for reading in my students, but I also want to make sure they value it. I think that with the resources I am requesting I will be better equipped to reach my goal...and in turn, help my students reach their goals.
