My Students

For my students to be able to compete with their peers from more affluent areas and internationally, it is vital that they start to get invested in their education at school and in the home. It is my job as their teacher to connect students with the resources in the classroom that will provide them with the education that they so rightfully deserve. They inspire me each and every day to find new resources and programs to support them the best way I can.

My scholars are motivated, determined, smart, and loving children that love to learn and strive to lead.

They come from all different types of homes, but the one thing they all seem to have in common is that they love to come to school and learn. We are lacking resources that enhance learning, promote diversity, and encourage exploring new concepts.

My Project

This project will help our class get closer to having a classroom library that reflects the students in our classroom. In addition, it will add books that give students an insight into other cultures that aren't always highlighted in their day-to-day life as well.

Growing our library with diverse characters is important.

First graders are little sponges and this is a great way to provide exposure to racism, inclusion, and diversity.

Often, educators believe that diverse character books means solely books highlighting people of Color. It is important that in addition to doing that, we also have books that include characters that identify within LGBTQ+ community, cultural traditions, activism, and equality.

Students use our classroom library as a way to explore their interests and find new interests. Students use our classroom library on a day-to-day basis to find books they enjoy that they read throughout the day; they read them either with me, a partner, or on their own. I hope that many of these books will offer a good opportunity for us to discuss race, activism, inclusion, diversity, ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation, just to name a few.

Representation matters. This library will provide more opportunities for my students to connect with books that have characters like them. They will get to read and learn about various races and cultural traditions. Books about racism and activism will encourage curiosity and understanding. They will learn about inclusion and be able to ask questions and grow in a safe space.
