My students are special. These cultural diverse mid-west fourth graders attend a school that is around 80% free and reduced lunch yet they try so hard every day to do their best. Even though my homeroom is only 20 students the staff collaborates and shares students so I see every fourth grader in our building. It makes our small neighbor school very tight nit.
However these students often miss out on fun or trendy games and activities due to lack of funding.
Right now we have 2 classes of energetic students which is split quite evenly half boys and half girls. These students learn best through hands on and real-world experiences. Our goal is to make their learning relevant and personal every day.
My Project
A fun and engaging activity many adults are participating in are escape rooms that require you to use clues and your team to break out of the room while under a time limit. Doesn't that sound like a lot of fun? Well the cool thing is, the excitement and benefits of the escape room are now available for the classroom!
I want to purchase 2 Breakout Edu kits and some extra black light flash lights and locks for my students to experience "breaking out" without the hassle of travel!
In order to breakout of these boxes, students have to to answer clues. The clues could focus on any skill like reading a map, deciphering an article, or completing a math problem. The best part is the collaboration piece. This activity allows for every student to participate and play to their strengths. Two kits allows two groups of students to be work on breaking out at the same time which allows for even more personalized, engaging, and relevant learning.
